The karmic rule

Beyond Meds: Alternatives to Psychiatry

ginsbergI think you have to follow the kharmic rule — that any action taken in anxiety, creates more anxiety. Any action taken in anger, spreads anger. Any action taken in violence, spreads violence. Any action taken in calm, spreads calm. Any action taken in equanimity, spreads equanimity. Any action taken gently, spreads gentility. To call cops pigs, is to create them in that image. To see them as future buddhas is to create them in that image. And since we are all in actuality future buddhas, you have to begin treating people more respectfully. Back and forth. Otherwise you lose ground.  The problem in the world is violence, and aggression against nature. And the use of aggression and violence to create home peace, at least in the situation around here, is contradictory.  ~ Allen Ginsburg, From: A talk with Allen Ginsburg: after the Tompkins Square police riot

Unwell person incited to commit suicide – on David Cameron’s Facebook page

Mike Sivier's blog

Just when you think you’ve seen the lowest the Conservatives can go, something happens that is completely beyond the pale.

Yesterday a message was posted to David Cameron’s Facebook page from a person who said they were going to commit suicide because they had been wrongly sanctioned.

The response – from one of Cameron’s supporters – was as follows: “Well get on with it then.”

This serious disability hate remark has been allowed to remain ever since – on the Prime Minister’s own Facebook page, which we are led to understand is overseen by professionals who, let’s not forget, paid for people to visit it and press the ‘Like’ button in order to make him look popular, and who may reasonably be expected to moderate such offensive behaviour off the page before it causes any real harm.

You can read more details on the Atos Miracles Facebook page.

Ed Miliband interview: The biggest issue we face is inequality

Politics and Insights

This interview was published by LabourList on May 6th
Ed Miliband has been touring the country by train in recent weeks as the Local and European elections loom into view.
On Friday, I joined him as he travelled to Cardiff and Bristol. We met in London’s Paddington Station bright and early. Miliband looks happy but a little tired. Perhaps that’s due to the extertions of a busy week, or perhaps it’s because it’s first thing on a Friday morning. Either would be understandable. Miliband is full of smiles though, upbeat after his announcement on rents the day before and relishing a day out on the campaign trail. I’m not sure where he gets the energy from – after just one day of train, walkabout, interview, train, walkabout, interview and another train I was exhausted.
Miliband, however, seemed less tired at the end of the day than he did at the…

MP calls for retention of vital fund which benefits the most severely disabled.

Originally posted hereon April 1, 2014 by Dame Anne Begg.
Aberdeen South MP, Dame Anne Begg, has called on the Government to save the Independent Living Fund (ILF) and allow the most disabled people to continue to live independently in their homes. She has also called on the Scottish Government to clarify what they will do to protect the independence of those living with a severe disability in Scotland.
To show her support for the retention of Independent Living Fund, which is relied upon by over 18,000 severely disabled, Dame Anne is the primary sponsor an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to reverse their decision to close the fund in June 2015. You can view the EDM here.
The Independent Living Fund provides discretionary cash payments directly to disabled people so they can purchase care from an…

The importance of visibility

The Asexual Agenda

(Note: This is an expanded re-post from textualtidepool)

Well it’s funny to think about, you’ve got the gays marching for the right to be cocksucking homosexuals, and then you have the asexuals marching for the right to not do anything. Which is hilarious. Like, you didn’t need to march for that right. You just need to stay home, not do anything.

– Dan Savage

I’ve been mulling over this comment, and the commentary of many other people, with regard to the inclusion of asexuality in queer and other support spaces for marginalized identities.

At first glance it strikes the average person as incredibly, well, reasonable.  It seems to make sense.  ”Why does there need to be an asexual section in the pride parade?  It’s not like anyone’s taking away their rights on the premise of their asexuality.”

Research Recruitment Request: Asexual Activism

"Just a friend": Emerging contemporary sex and gender social movements

My ethics approval has gone through. Actually I’m pretty chuffed as the ethics committee passed me first time without a single amendment.

I’m now looking to recruit participants for my study (please see the attached Participant Information Sheet and Consent Sheet).

To give a quick idea of what my project is about – below is the introductory letter/email that I’m sending to social networks seeking participants (please feel free to pass to anyone you think might be interested, thanks in advance):

Research study: Newer Sexual & Gender Social Movements – Asexual Activism

I am a doctoral student at the Open University at Milton Keynes who is carrying out a study on Newer Sexual and Gender Social Movements, with a focus on asexual activism, such as asexuality.org,  AVEN, etc. To take part in the study, you will need to meet the following criteria:

Is this what Governments of the world proposed?

Is this what Governments of the world proposed?

Read any newspaper, look at television programmes or listening to the radio. There are so many stories of crime, war and terrorism! Think about your own troubles, perhaps personal illness even a death in the family, these are only some examples of issues that really distress you.

Ask yourself:

Is this what Governments of the world proposed for me and for the rest of human kind?

Where can I find help to cope with my problems?
