Shameful racism and homophobia in local elections. No not UKIP – the Lib Dems

There’s been – quite rightly – lots of focus recently on UKIP local election candidates’ vile views on various things from gay marriage to race.

But it should be remembered that the Lib Dems have a longer and just as shameful history in local elections when it comes to racism and homophobia.

In previous local elections, the Lib Dems have not been averse to producing a racist leaflet – depicting an obviously black man, snarling with clenched fists and supposedly threatening elderly residents – if they thought it would win them votes.

And the Lib Dems have also not been averse to using a bit of homophobia if they thought it would win them an election.

Here’s a Lib Dem leaflet from a local election in 2012 in which one of their local candidates was pitted against an openly gay Tory candidate:

Last week, five mental health champions in the House of Representatives introduced the Strengthening Mental Health in Our Communities Act.

Thank you to Representatives Ron Barber (AZ-2), Diana DeGette (CO-1), Doris Matsui (CA-6), Grace Napolitano (CA-32) and Paul Tonko (NY-20). Their bill gives us a forward-looking alternative to regressive mental health legislation. Yet it is already the target of extreme misrepresentation in the press, and is being attacked on social media as well.

Wow – my distant friend an inspiration to many where he lives (the USA), but I am in the hope he and his beautiful wife and bring inspiration to people where I live (here in the UK).
